Why hire a porter?
Many people have opinions on portering. So do we. We recommend hiring porters. Simply hiring someone directly is the very best way to help a family put their children through school with dignity. Nepal suffers from huge under-employment. There are many diverse reasons why that is. Jobs are scarce. Trekking portering is a relatively good job, compared to pretty most every other job there is in Nepal. The load weight is limited to 30kg maximum, payment is guaranteed per ‘camp’ which means the usual trekking distance hiked on a day of a camping trek. We pay the porters we hire a good wage for good work, make sure they are well fed and equipped for the cold.
You may not like the idea of hiring someone to carry something for you, or you may not be prepared to pay for that. Consider that this is probably the first and last time you will visit Manaslu. You may have the satisfaction of carrying your own bag with you at high altitude on this mountainous trek, but you will enjoy it a lot more if a) you hire a porter, b) make friends with him (usually him) and learn some Nepali to complement his English c) have gratitude for being able to give someone work, however basic it is.
